Finding Your Style – A New Mum’s Journey

When I became a mum, I expected the sleepless nights and the endless nappies, but I didn’t realise how much I’d lose my sense of me.

Somewhere between burping sessions and figuring out how to breastfeed in public without flashing everyone at the café, my old wardrobe just didn’t fit anymore - physically and emotionally.

Living in New Zealand, style here is so often about comfort and function. But comfort doesn't have to mean giving up on feeling good in what you wear. As a new mum, I learnt that your style doesn’t disappear - it just shifts (although it did take me a while to realise this). For me, finding great basic breastfeeding clothing was the key to getting my groove back.

At first, I felt overwhelmed. My pre-baby clothes didn’t suit this new chapter, but I also didn’t want to live in baggy hoodies and bike shorts forever. I missed feeling like myself. That’s when I started experimenting - trying on different looks during nap time, asking myself what felt good, not just what fit. I stopped aiming for a "look" and started aiming for how I wanted to feel: confident, relaxed, and like me again.

Think soft, stretchy tops that don’t scream “breastfeeding”, but make feeding quick and easy. A plain black breastfeeding tee became my most-worn piece - paired with leggings for a coffee run, or dressed up with jeans, boots, and a long coat for brunch with friends. It was effortless, but I still felt put together. And that feeling is golden when most days you’re running on three hours’ sleep and cold coffee.

What I’ve come to love (even post-breastfeeding) is that basics give you the flexibility to dress up or down, depending on the day - or let’s be honest, the hour. They’re like the unsung heroes of the postpartum wardrobe. Layered under a denim jacket or styled with a midi skirt and sneakers, they help you feel a little more like yourself again.

Finding your style after having a baby isn’t about returning to who you were - it’s about gently discovering who you are now. And sometimes that starts with something as simple as a soft, flattering breastfeeding tee that fits just right. Something that you can wear time and time again, but in several different ways.

So if you’re in that blurry newborn phase, wondering if you’ll ever feel stylish again, trust me, you will. Start simple. Start with the basics. Mix, match, layer, and most of all -listen to you. Because your style isn’t gone, mama. It’s just waiting to be rediscovered.
